HARLEM’S FAIR OPENING.

Tl ie Harlem meeting opened yesterday with
ideal racing weather and a light attendance.
The track was dry and lumpy generally. It was
<i©61) and tiring on the inside. Horses that
tool: the short route had the worst of the going.
In .‘hat particular footing Imp negotiated a
J^il * in 1 :44. She ran the fourth furlong in 111
and. W as under restraint from the half mile
gro and to the finish. Just at the finish the filly
■was shaken up to stall off Frank Thompson’s
•det ermined bid. Turner looked over his
shoMjider and let the mare loaf the last three
sixteenths. A little more indulgence would
hav 9 caused her to lose the race and there is
■°ffi c ual authority for the statement that, if she
Turner would have been ruled off. Boys
*i iav e no business to take such chances.

-•he first race produced a nose and head fin-
* s b . in which the favorite, Cherryflame, won,
anf 4 Millie M beat Warren Point, a 10 to 1
chance, for the place. A hundred and fifty
'’«uds from the end, Warren Point came from
^behind and looked a sure winner. The other
two got away from him again, but he was the
strongest at the stand and would have won in a
few more strides. Gnome and Cherryflame set
the pace until near the last eighth. Then
GT’ome retired. The others ran miserably.

'ihe second race, four and a half furlongs, for
2-year-old fillies, was really a contest between
two, although seven started. Black Venus
opened at 2 to 5 and went to 1 to 2. Then the
talent plunged to get sure money. Espirage, at
3 to 1 and 7 to 10, was liberally supported. The
favorite got the best of a good start, and was
quickly joined by Espirage. At the end of a half
they were ’driving. Under punishment Espirage
drew out and won easily. The others were
beaten off.

A selling event of a mile and a sixteenth was
won by Joe Clark, a 3 to 1 shot. Newsgatherer
and Moncreith were equal favorites at 2 to 1.
Newsgatherer led into the streteh. Moncreith’
lay next to last for nearly three-quarters. In
the stretch Joe Clark challenged Newsgatherer,
and Sunburst, Banquo II, Pete Kitchen and
Moncreith came up in a bunch. Newsgatherer
yielded, and, dropping back, caused a shuffle
that checked Banquo and Sunburst, causing the
latter to seriously impede Moncreith. There-
after Clark had command, Banquo and Mon-
• creith had a drive for the place, while Sutton
finished strongly, a good fourth.

At five furlongs, for 3-year-olds, Dave Waldo
cleverly won from Peter McCue, Richard J,,
being an ordinary third.

Imp was a 1 to 4 shot against J H C, Frank
Thompson and Lucid. Mr. Laudeman backed
his colt for the place and J H C carried the Joe
Clark winnings. Lucid got away last and then
tried to make Imp stop. He hung on until the
homestretch was reached. J H C and Frank
Thompson then fought out second place and
the latter won the fight. He is a good colt.

Hugh Penny got off last in the sixth race and
won easily. Diggs led into the stretch only to
finish an indifferent third, Floronso making a
final effort and driving hard at the winner’s
^jlNieels.

Eugene Leigh, accompanied by Jockey Turner,
left last night for Cincinnati. This morning
they will work Heliobas for the Emerald Stakes
to be run tomorrow at Oakley. Turner will
have the mount.

Suisun has been retired. Eugene Leigh has
sold her to Clay & Woodford, and Friday she will
be shipped to Kentucky.

NORTHERN CIRCUIT RACES.

Racing on the Northern Circuit begins June 7,
with Highland Park, Detroit, as the scene of

operations. Concerning prospects a letter to
Daily Racing Form says :

“The Detroit Derby will be the feature of the
day’s sport, and of the forty-seven nominations
the indications are that a field of eight will face
Starter Brown. The race will be one of inter-
national interest, as the best of the Canadian
3-year-olds will try conclusions with some of
the American colts. William Hendrie’s Harvey,
b. c, by Himyar— Safety, will carry the bulk of
the Canadian money. This colt recently breezed
a mile in 1:454 over the Toronto track, doing it
handily. J. E. Seagram, D. A. Boyle and N.
Dyment are also wealthy Canadians who will
send a candidate to the post. Among the
American colts eligible to start are Traverser,
LieberKarl, Isabey, Sacket, Opaque and Pace-
maker.

The opening of Highland Park will also be
the formal opening of the new northern racing
circuit which includes the tracks at Fort Erie,
Montreal and Windsor.

“At a meeting of the board of directors of the
association it was decided to invite all re-
sponsible bookmakers to draw in at the usual
price of $100 per day. June 6th the Maccabee’s
will begin a six day’s convention in Detroit
when between thirty and fifty thousand
strangers will be in the city and this insures a
tremendous crowd for the Derby and week’s
racing. Detroit has had a iong rest from racing
and the public now promises to liberally sup-
port the short season at that point.

Secretary W. O. Parmer has received appli-
cations for stable room for twice as mauy
horses as he will be able to accommodate. He
has ordered 200 more stalls built at the Bel-Air
(Montreal) track. John J. Carter will arrive in
Detroit in time to take charge of the presiding
chair at each point on the circuit.

NOTES OF THE TURF.

Heliobas, the 2-year-old son of Farandole —
Bowden Lass, and the best colt in the west, is
now the property of Bromley & Co., the big
Chicago owners, who are now campaigning a
string of horses in the east. At Oakley, H.
Eugene Leigh, acting for Bromley & Co., pur-
chased Heliobas from George Whitney for
$10,000. The sale was closed by Frank Jones,
of Lexington— Heliobas’ trainer— acting for Mr.
Whitney. Heliobas will remain at Oakley in
the charge of Jones until next Thursday, when
he will run in the Emerald Stakes for 2-year-
olds. After this race Heliobas will be shipped
to Chicago, where he has stake engagements
at Harlem and Washington Park. Heliobas has
defeated the best 2-year-olds yet uncovered in
the west, and so far nothing has been found that
could take his measure.— Cincinnati Com-
mercial Tribune.

The New York Sun says that Ben Brush was
shipped to Kentucky on Wednesday evening,
Dr. Sheppard made an examination of the horse
and found that he could not undergo another
hard preparation to fit him to carry the heavy
imposts that he would be called upon to shoulder
in the handicaps this season. James R. Keene,
his owner, decided to ship him to his breeding
establishment at Castleton.

While riding Travis in the race won by Sedan
at Oakley Monday, Jockey W. Dean slashed
Jock«r Crowhurst across the face with his
whip. For this display of bad temper the
judges gave him a fine of $100 and indefinite
suspension.

At Sheepshead Bay track Sunday the well-
known racer, Lake Shore, while at exercise
broke both fore legs at the ankle and was at
once shot. He was in training for the Brooklyn
Handicap.

M. F. Dwyer’s Lithos broke down hopelessly
at Gravesend Monday.

Liark was the best. He was oft on the outside and compelled to go around the entire field on
the first turn. Turner rode a nice race on him. The pace was slow. Banquo II finished gamely.
He and Moncreith both suffered through crowding in the stretch. Joe Clark, Sunburst and
A ewsgatnerer seemed to be the cause of. the interference. It was not enough, however, to call
for a decision under the foul rule. Moncreith is a stretch runner and Newsgatherer a coward.

Winnor— B. g, 8, by Luke Blackburn— Maud Ward.

Oil at first break to a fair start. Wou cleverly; the next three were driving. Hugh Penny
was much the best. He was oft none too well aud had to run around his field. At no part of the
route did Caywood have to urge him. Ho is a real good selling plater. Watch Floronso. He
ran a splendid race. Turner sat still on him all the way. Diggs showed a lot of speed. He went
a. 1 to pieces, though, when lie faced the heavy wind in the stretch. Meddler cooked Marito’s
tgoose, and also his own, by the early, fast pace. The ride on Tit for Tat was horrible.

Scratched— Ramiro II, 118; Lew Hopper, 109.
